The SOLARS study is a medical research study following Black and Latina women in Oakland through their pregnancies to better understand how stress and experience of racism contribute to pre-term birth. The original study is hands-on, requiring coordinators to visit participants in their homes to collect research data. The outcome of this project was a digital (web and mobile app) study experience that reduced the coordinator burden, allowing the team to reach more women. The online SOLARS Study was built on the UCSF Eureka Research platform—a platform for digital medical research studies. As part of this project, the Eureka team built new features for the Eureka platform to allow coordinators to enter data on behalf of participants as well to allow participants to contribute in multiple languages.
I did usability testing, wireframing, prototyping, and graphic design as lead designer for UCSF Eureka Research. I worked with Beth Berrean, Deputy Director of Design and Discovery at UCSF on the usability testing and participatory design sessions as part of the larger Diverse eCohorts project. A huge thank you to Beth, I learned so much from her!
